Discover the places not to be missed in Giulianova and plan your trip!

Here are now 10 places not to be missed in Giulianova. These 10 wonders of Giulia will surely fascinate you. Plan your trip!

1 – Sanctuary of the Madonna dello Splendore

This place of worship is the excellence of Giulianova, and it is built on the sacred ground where around 1500, the Virgin appeared to Bertoldino, a poor farmer. Chronicles tell that the Madonna appeared full of light near an olive tree, from which a source of pure water sprang. The miraculous fountain is undoubtedly worth a visit, as well as the Museum of Art of Splendor, which unfortunately has been closed in recent years. This is undoubtedly a suggestive place, even for non-believers.

2 – Port of Giulianova

The main port of the province of Teramo, it is the most important in the region for tourist docking. Central to Giulianova’s life, it plays a fundamental role in the city’s economy, thanks to the many fishermen always at work. Don’t miss the spectacular light effects that color the sky of Giulianova from dawn to dusk.

3 – Church of San Flaviano

An octagonal church, unique in Abruzzo, and dedicated to the patron saint of Giulianova. On November 24th, San Flaviano is celebrated, who was the Patriarch of Constantinople, whose remains were found along the beaches of Giulianova. This is an additional opportunity to visit the city and enjoy the celebrations throughout the week.

4 – Monumental Promenade

Designed by the Giulianese Giuseppe Meo, it is the perfect solution for all lovers of walks with a sea view. Almost a kilometer long, it has everything you need to make the most of your stay: hotels, bars, restaurants, shops, and much more.

5 – Tower “La Rocca” and Civic Archaeological Museum

Visiting this architecture, you can relive the history of Giulianova. Located in the historic center of the city, it is part of the remains of the walls built by Giuliantonio Acquaviva d’Aragona, Duke of Atri, who refounded the city in the fifteenth century giving it its name. The tower has been home to the archaeological section of the Civic Museum since 2001, with evidence of the Roman city of Castrum Novum Piceni, founded by the Romans in 290 BC. Among the most important finds are the decorated lamps produced in Castrum and shipped from the port, reaching the far corners of the Empire.

6 – The Caliscendi

Giulianova’s response to the Trabocchi of the Teatina coast. These small shacks are located on the south pier of Giulianova and have long wooden planks that extend out into the sea, to which fishermen hang their nets. The caliscendi, in the local dialect of calescinne, are a unique attraction to relive the art of fishing as it was once done.

7 – The Belvedere

Located near the main square of the city, the nineteenth-century Piazza della Libertà, this belvedere is the perfect place to appreciate Giulianova in all its beauty. Let yourself be enchanted by the breathtaking view of the Adriatic Sea.

8 – Pinacoteca Casa-Museo “Vincenzo Bindi”

It is the heart of the Civic Museum Complex, reopened after 15 years of closure. The collection spans three centuries of Neapolitan (Posillipo School), southern and Abruzzese painting, with works by artists such as Jusepe de Ribera, Raffaele and Gonsalvo Carelli, Francesco Paolo Michetti, Raffaello Pagliaccetti, Costantino Barbella, Gennaro Della Monica, Pasquale Celommi and many others. The rooms also display sculptures, valuable furnishings, ancient tapestries and majolica from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, from Capodimonte, Ginori di Doccia and Castelli d’Abruzzo.

9 – Church of St. Anthony

The church was part of a Franciscan convent built in the sixteenth century, which was destroyed at the beginning of the twentieth century. The interior is a surprising example of late Baroque, with sculptures and reliefs in stucco, altars with scenes from the Old and New Testaments and a group of reliefs of the Glory of St. Francis on the apse. The organ case, made by Onofrio Cacciapuoti in 1737, is located above the choir at the entrance.

10 – Church of Santa Maria a mare

The Romanesque church, nicknamed “dell’Annunziata”, is the last testimony of ancient medieval Giulianova, built on pre-Roman remains dating back to the 10th century. The facade is made of terracotta, with a marble and porphyry portal, rich in interesting reliefs and sculptures, the work of Raimondo del Podio, a leading artist of the 14th century from Atri. The interior, damaged and remodeled, has two naves with terracotta and stone pillars and capitals, and rounded arches.
